Essential starter kit for every new naturalista!

1.     Products
Yes, you will need to buy the essential products and it can be done without developing a serious case of ‘product junkism’. I have dedicated a whole post on how to prevent this from happening, read about it here!

2.     Wide-toothed comb!
This is textured hair 101! The space between the teeth on a wide-toothed comb is wide enough to allow hair to glide through. A wide-tooth comb puts less stress and pull on natural hair reducing the chances of breakage. Just don’t forget to put conditioner on the hair to make de-tangling easy.

3.    Spray bottle
A spray bottle is a must! It can be used in so many ways, below are a few ways it comes in handy for me:

• Can be used to wet a section of hair which has dried during the styling process
•  Can be used to spritze hair with water, conditioner-water or oil-water mixture to re add moisture to dry/old hair
• Can be used to dampen hair to slick back into a bun without re-wetting all the hair

4.    T-shirt or microfibre towel
Don’t use a regular towel to dry your hair, it only creates frizz! Instead use a t-shirt or a microfibre towel (I prefer t-shirt) to gently dry your hair and keep the frizz to a minimum.

5.    Satin scarf/ pillowcase
Switch your usual cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin material, believe me it really does make a difference! Unlike satin or silk, cotton will absorb the moisture from the hair and the rough surface can lead to friction which can lead to hair breakage which is a big no-no! 

6.    Stretchy hair ties/ headbands without the metal part
Stretchy hair ties or headband are essential in keeping your hair out of your face, into cute updo’s but most importantly preventing unnecessary breakage. When buying them, avoid elastic hair bands that have metal connectors. The metal part can cause your hair to rip out from the nape!

7.   Bobby pins
I love bobby pins! They are perfect for pinning in place those annoying stray hairs which like  to do their own thing. Bobby pins are also great for creating cute styles and updo’s. I always carry 2-3 in my bag with me at all times.

 8.    Butterfly clip
Perfect for securing hair out of the way or in sections while you are styling or lathering on a deep condition treatment! Great way to make the process easier and ensuring you don’t miss a spot.

9.     Plastic cap
When deep conditioning your hair always place a plastic cap over your tresses. This enables your body heat to become trapped and aid the treatment in penetrating your hair. This maximises the absorption into the hair strand resulting in well nourished hair!

There are other tools which I think are useful but are not essential. These include:

• Blow dryer/ diffuser - To help speed up drying time!
• Dryer/Steamer - To help treatments absorb into the hair strand
