Natural hair is beautiful and by following my super easy top 10 tips it couldn’t be easier.
1) Water/moisture
Natural hair needs moisture! Curly hair thrives in a moisture rich environment and there’s no better way to quench your hairs thirst than water. Best ways to implement moisture into your hair regime is washing minimum once a week. Use products such as leave-in conditioners which have water as a main ingredient or spritz hair with water from time to time. Not forgetting drinking plenty of water! Remember your natural hair curl pattern will come out more if it is able to absorb and retain moisture better.
2) Sulphate-free shampoo
The best shampoos for curly hair are sulphate-free, paraben free and alcohol free. As curly hair is dryer and more fragile than other hair types, it is necessary to avoid shampoos with these drying ingredients. Choose gentle cleansers to clean the hair and scalp without leaving your hair feeling stripped and straw like.
The more kinks your hair has, the harder it is for the scalps’ natural oils to travel down the hair shaft. Shampooing hair once a week is enough, however this can depend on your life style (such as going to the gym) which may need you to wash more than once a week. An alternative is to co-wash (wash hair with only conditioner) in-between shampoo wash days. This can help retain moisture longer.

3) Deep conditioning treatment
I love deep conditioning my hair! If you are trying to bring the health of your hair back or just want to maintain strong heathy natural hair, deep conditioning once-twice a week is essential! There are many different deep conditioning treatments available from store bought products to DIY recipes you can whip together at home. Which is best for you will depend on your budget but most of all what your hair and scalp need. (For Deep Conditioning Treatments click here!)
4) Natural products
Always read the ingredients in hair products, switching to products that are natural and have organic ingredients are best as they will not contain chemicals. Remember products with ingredients which are drying do more damage than good. Yes they do tend to be more expensive, however there are cheaper lines available or if you have the time you can look up recipes and make your own!

5) Avoid heat/chemicals
Heat damages hair, it dries hair by taking out the moisture making it become brittle. Heat can damage your hair to the point that the curl pattern is lost and eventually leads to breakage. To have healthy hair, heat should be avoided. The only time a LITTLE heat is good is when you are deep conditioning and even then you have to be careful.
Chemicals will damage your hair, even if it doesn’t at first, in the long run it will! Embrace your natural hair, it’s beautiful!
6) Low manipulation
This is an important one! Styling your hair in low manipulation styles will help with reducing unnecessary tension and breakage on the hair strand. I love switching up my styles, however I have reduced the number of styles per week as too much manipulation leads to excessive breakage. Protective styles give your hair a break and that feeling of freeing your hair and falling in love with your curls again - priceless! Great protective styles can include; wearing a bun, braids or even a beautiful head wrap which are available in any print of your choice. When wearing a head-wrap why not condition on the down-low underneath a plastic cap, I have done this plenty of times! :D
7) Silk scarf/pillowcase
Protecting your hair at night can make a big difference in the health of your hair. Switching from your usual cotton pillowcase to a silk or satin pillowcase really does make a difference. Cotton absorbs moisture from hair and the rough surface can lead to friction between the hair strands and surface. This friction can lead to hair breakage which is a big no-no. With a satin/silk pillowcase or scarf, your hair can slide against the smooth surface and not get tangled which reduces hair damage and breakage.

8) Healthy diet/ lifestyle
We all know we are what we eat. Having a healthy diet not only shows on your waist but on your skin, hair and mental wellbeing. Try to consume a more healthy diet because the nutrients you eat will help fortify the hair follicle and the scalp. Which in simpler terms means – healthy follicles and healthy scalp equals healthier hair! Having a healthy diet is vital but a healthy lifestyle is important. Factors such as smoking, not having enough sleep or hormonal imbalance can also effect hair growth.
9) Keep a hair journal
Keep a hair journal to keep track of your progress as well as make notes of any changes you notice in your hair, which you will throughout the different stages.
It is also a great way to make note of what products worked well, didn’t work well and which products didn’t mix well together. We all know that feeling of disaster when you see little white balls all over your head!
(For why keeping a Hair Journal is important click here!)
10) Patience…… (I know, easier said than done!)
The key to hair growth is patience.
Patience is key when you are trying out different products to see what works and what doesn’t work with your hair. Patience is needed when you have setbacks - which you will at some point. But most of all, it takes patience when waiting for however many years it may take to grow long natural hair.
I never set myself hair length goals, I don’t really see the point. My hair will grow at its own pace and that is good enough for me. If you are adamant to set hair goals, be realistic when setting yourself targets, hair doesn’t grow long overnight and it may not grow at the same speed as your friend, favourite YouTuber or Instagramer.
So enjoy the journey of embracing your natural hair and reward yourself for being natural and proud, that’s way more important! What else would you add to your top 10 natural haircare tips?
Good-luck on your hair journey!
